While the entire world is being divided into two camps, either in favour or against the reality-TV programs like Big Brother, Loft Story, Star Academy, Popstars or Expedition Robinson, a French production team has made a movie entitled Qui Veut Devenir Une Star ? (Who Wants To Be A Star ?), first reported on here back in May 2001.
The film is based on the concept of the above mentioned voyeurism shows, this time with eight comedians locked up in an apartment, constantly being filmed by television. Each week, the audience votes which candidate has to leave; so far nothing different to the popular TV-shows. But in this movie, each week a candidate gets killed ! So is there a serial killer amongst the candidates or is it part of the 'game' to kill the loser ?
Amongst the French actors, we have some famous names like Alika Del Sol (from Rastignac ou les ambitieux) and Jocelyn Quivrin. Filmed with digital cameras, the movie is directed by Patrice Pooyard and produced by Sam Alta Film for 1.5 Million Euros (approximately £925,000).
The original soundtrack of the movie has been composed by Jean Michel Jarre during the summer, assisted by Francis Rimbert, produced and mixed by Joachim Garraud at Square Prod. In total, more than 40 minutes of original music has been written in Dolby 5:1 format, with basically one main song and melody, and a lot of small excerpts of sounds, the longest excerpt being 15 seconds !
The movie was premiered on Wednesday 31st October 2001 at the MIFED festival (International Audiovisual Market for companies and professionals) in Milan. The producers are now in contact with distributors all over the world to release the movie, although only some Asian distributors have shown their interest so far.
